After being named one of the worst cities for cyclists in 2008 and 2010 by Bicycling magazine, Memphis has been recognized by the publication this year as its most improved city.
Mayor A C Wharton built more than 35 miles of new bike lanes in Memphis in 2011 as part of an initiative. Perhaps the most popular new route, the Greenline, has led to a sizable increase in cycling at Shelby Farms Park.

Don't scream for ice cream in Horn Lake. Ask quietly. The DeSoto County city cited an ice cream truck vendor this week for violating its noise ordinance.
The price for loud music? It could cost the driver or his employer to the tune of up to $1,000, according to the ordinance. Under the city's noise ordinance, on the books since 1998, amplified sound should not be audible more than 30 feet from the vehicle.

The Kingdom of Sweden will be the honored country for next year's Memphis in May International Festival. It will be the first time a Scandinavian country has been honored during the 37 year history of Memphis in May.
Organizers say a limited amount of early Music Fest tickets may go on sale around the Christmas holidays, but that the bulk of event sales will commence in early 2013.
