After being named one of the worst cities for cyclists in 2008 and 2010 by Bicycling magazine, Memphis has been recognized by the publication this year as its most improved city.

Mayor A C Wharton built more than 35 miles of new bike lanes in Memphis in 2011 as part of an initiative. Perhaps the most popular new route, the Greenline, has led to a sizable increase in cycling at Shelby Farms Park.

Don't scream for ice cream in Horn Lake. Ask quietly. The DeSoto County city cited an ice cream truck vendor this week for violating its noise ordinance.

The price for loud music? It could cost the driver or his employer to the tune of up to $1,000, according to the ordinance. Under the city's noise ordinance, on the books since 1998, amplified sound should not be audible more than 30 feet from the vehicle.

The Kingdom of Sweden will be the honored country for next year's Memphis in May International Festival. It will be the first time a Scandinavian country has been honored during the 37 year history of Memphis in May.

Organizers say a limited amount of early Music Fest tickets may go on sale around the Christmas holidays, but that the bulk of event sales will commence in early 2013.

One-day tourists will be able to get on a water taxi at the Beale Street Landing, then ride it to the proposed Bass Pro shop and beyond.

The council is expected to vote on transferring $$$ to the project this week. If approved it will create many jobs and revenue for the city.

City Councilman Lendermon estimated that it'll be at least a year until any taxi is put in the water.

The City Council on Tuesday approved sending a referendum to voters to add a 1-cent tax to every gallon of gasoline sold within city limits, with the proceeds going to public transportation.

That 8-3 vote means the referendum will be placed on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The James Lee House in Victorian Village was sold to a private developer for $1, but the project is still being scrutinized to ensure the city can legally part with the mansion.

Developer Jose Velazquez expects to invest the historic site on Adams Avenue to open a bed-and-breakfast with five luxury suites.

Chisca Hotel Restoration

The Chisca Hotel is under plans to be rennovated. The Memphis City Council is hearing requests to add a 1 cent tax on every gallon of gas sold in Memphis. If approved, this tax could bring in as much as $6 Million!
