New architect approved for Jackson Co. jail

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County supervisors have approved a contract with Goldberg, Sullivan and McCrerey Architects & Planners to design the new Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

The Mississippi Press reports (http://bit.ly/U5BVrm) supervisors discussed the matter in a closed session on Monday.

Supervisor Mike Mangum voted against the measure, saying he would have preferred to work with previous architect Pryor and Morrow to change their design rather than switching companies.

In August, supervisors terminated the contract with Pryor, a company that had received $1.2 million while designing a brick & mortar jail.

After seeking new design ideas over the summer, supervisors decided to go with Goldberg, which pitched a jail made up of modular steel cells that can be stacked two or four cells high upon a deep foundation.
