SNPA honors opinion writers

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - The Southern Newspaper Publishers Association has presented the Carmage Walls Commentary Prize to Linda Campbell - an editorial writer and columnist for the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, along with executive editor Scott Morris and staff writer Robert Palmer - of the TimesDaily in Florence, Ala.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony Monday in Naples, Fla.

Among newspapers with circulations over 50,000, Campbell wrote about the awarding of contracts for delinquent tax collection that demonstrated collusion between elected officials and contract winners. In the under 50,000 bracket, Morris and Palmer wrote a series of editorials and columns on a new immigration law in Alabama.

Second place winners were Steve Stewart, publisher of The Tidewater News, Franklin, Va., and John Railey, editorial page editor of the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal.
