MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Not even breezy, cold weather kept supporters of heart research indoors Saturday.

Some 15 hours after a massive cold front pushed through the Mid-South bringing with it rain, wind, and a 30-degree temperature drop, hundreds of walkers joined companies, employees and performers to kick off the 2012 Mid-South Heart Walk.

The annual event raises awareness about the deadly toll heart disease take on families every year.

FOX13 News anchors Greg Coy and Mearl Purvis bundled up to beat the cold and helped kick things off.

Over at Shelby Farms, walkers moved with FOX13's Darrell Greene to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Hundreds of walkers helped raise $396,000 by the end of the race.

Unlike heart disease, Type 1 diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.
