MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A revised court filing shows the Shelby County Commission might refuse to provide funds to six new suburban school districts unless a judge requires it.

The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/SZMwhb ) reported the amended complaint filed in U.S. District Court states the commission will take whatever steps are necessary to avoid funding a resegregation of the public schools.

Commission Chairman Mike Ritz said commission lawyers seek direction from Judge Samuel "Hardy" Mays, who is expected to rule soon on whether the new local school systems approved by a half-dozen Memphis suburban cities are legal.

Voters in the suburban cities voted to open their own schools because the Memphis City Schools are in their last year of operation and will combine with the county schools next fall.
