It started with Vance Daly, stopping to give homeless people rides.

Something touched his heart.

"One day the Lord was like, 'Hey Vance, you see those people? you are going that way already. Just stop and give them a ride,'" Vance said. "You're a captive audience if I pick you up and if you are not going to hear about Jesus, then you may have to jump out going down the road."
 
Down the road Vance and his wife Kim ran into more and more homeless people in DeSoto County. The attorney, and his wife, a former curriculum specialist, saw a need and have been spiritually moved to try to open the first homeless shelter in DeSoto County.

"We would like to be the bridge into a community that needs help at this point," Kim said.

To give you an idea of how strongly the Dalys believe in helping the homeless, they have opened their doors to a homeless man. He is currently living with them while he is trying to get his feet back on the ground.

"According to 'Matthew 25:40,' we are serving Jesus by serving others," Vance said. "That's one motivation. The other is that if that was me walking down the road, I would want somebody to help me out and my heart is broken by God to help people."

The Dalys are looking at a 1.5-acre plot on the southwest side of Hernando as the future site of the county's first homeless shelter. Many of us probably don't see much here but then again, maybe we don't have the faith they've got.

"Initially we want to start small with one house, use that as a place for people to meet their physical and spiritual needs, and then maybe build a pavilion and start a grassroots church," Kim said.

Kim and Vance are looking for the funding to make it happen. They believe that if they can help just a few souls they can make a difference, and no telling what may grow from there.

They hope to raise initially $19,000.
