Civil War marker to be placed Saturday near Searcy

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - An historical marker noting a Civil War skirmish is to be placed near Searcy to note a Confederate victory over the Union.

The marker is to be dedicated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gum Springs Fire Department on Highway 267 South.

The marker will commemorate fighting at Des Arc Bayou in 1863.

The Searcy Daily Citizen reports (http://is.gd/1z7wq8 ) 221 Union soldiers were sent north from Little Rock and camped overnight about five miles southwest of Searcy. About 500 Confederate soldiers surrounded them and attacked. At the end of the fighting, 131 of the Union troops were killed, wounded or captured.
