State grant to help with tire removal

GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The state will provide $50,000 to Leflore County to remove discarded tires from the school district bus shop.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (http://bit.ly/TkdZtu) that the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality recently gave the school system 30 days to remove about 2,000 tires after it declared the bus shop a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Health officials say the standing water trapped in the tires attracts mosquitoes breed in standing water.

Residents of Magnolia Manor and Golden Age Nursing Home, which is located next to the bus shop, have also complained about the tires.

Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham says the county had been spraying the area surrounding the bus shop.

He says MDEQ has provided a list of vendors who will pick up the tires and properly dispose of them.
