CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - The Corinth Board of Aldermen has scheduled a special election Dec. 11 on the sale of liquor in the city.
The Daily Corinthian reports (http://bit.ly/SMQsoA ) that aldermen voted 5-1 Tuesday to schedule the special election for a city-wide referendum.
Supporters of a vote on the liquor issue had been gathering signatures since September and presented the board with the petitions.
A new state law changed the eligibility requirements for municipalities that may hold liquor elections. The petitions must include the signatures of at least 20% of the city's registered voters.
Alcorn County was a wet county for 21 years until 1989, when Alcorn County voters ended liquor sales and, in a city election, Corinth voters said "yes" to beer sales. Liquor elections failed in 1993 and 2005.
