MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Scott Porter, a 42-year-old convicted felon, is being held on $3 million bond and charged with second degree murder in the August homicide inside a Downtown Memphis high-rise.

Memphis police say Porter beat Connie Cox, 47, to death Aug. 14 in a stairwell inside the Renaissance Apartments. Ms. Cox died from blunt force trauma, a Shelby County Medical Examiner said. She died not far from Porter's apartment.

Investigators discovered that Porter was possibly responsible for the homicide. Homicide detectives found out that Porter was in another state seeking undisclosed medical treatment.

After treatment, Porter was later arrested on an unrelated charge in connection with a warrant out of Collierville, Tenn.

In 1991, Porter served only two years after he plead guilty to criminally negligent homicide in another case.
