7 injured in multi-car accident with police cruiser, bus
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -
At least seven people were injured after a car collided with another car and then hit a police cruiser that then set off a chain-reaction crash with other vehicles and a Memphis Area Transit Authority bus Friday afternoon on the Poplar Avenue bridge near Scott Street.
The collision unfolded at around 3;15 p.m. in the westbound lanes on Poplar Avenue.
Six vehicles were involved in the traffic accident and seven ambulances were dispatched, police said.
According to police the chain-reaction crash unfolded when one of the vehicles was traveling eastbound on Poplar Avenue at a high rate of speed and struck another vehicle. The driver who was speeding over-corrected, crossed left of center and struck an on-coming police cruiser head-on.
MATA Bus No. 873 was traveling westbound on the Poplar Avenue bridge was then struck.
The driver that started the chain-reaction crash had to be cut out of a car by firefighters with the Jaws of Life, first responders said. The victim was taken to The MED in critical condition.
At least eight other victims were on the MATA bus and transported to area hospitals in non-life threatening condition.
Poplar Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions for two hours.
The traffic accident remains under investigation.
