Memphis City Councilman Jim Strickland said his city has too many free standing bike-lane signs and that they contribute to blight.
 
Councilman Strickland doesn't have a problem with the signs themselves, but their placement. The signs were installed all along 55 miles of new bicycle routes which wind through the Bluff City, but Strickland says the "free-standing: signs are unsightly and unnecessary.

"Just between the Pink Palace Museum and Highland and Center there's something like 12 or 14 new signs," he said. "They're 8-feet tall. They're put in peoples front yards and they're placed within 5-feet or so of already existing poles. Either light or utility pole that can be used. Not only would it look better it would save some money."

During a council committee meeting, Councilman Strickland proposed eliminating funding for those fixed signs.
