A Memphis City Councilman says a look at the bookkeeping of the public golf courses in Memphis does not add up. Councilman Edmund Ford Jr. says unexplained cost increases and expenditures need an independent look.

Bookkeeping records on the city golf courses show some cost increases of 100% to 1000%. Ford, who also has his masters in mathematics, says it doesn't add up.

Several courses say a more than 100% in the cost of rent over last year.

Ford says it's not clear to him who the city would even pay rent to on a public course. There are also tens of thousands of dollars in charges in "city shop charges" that were not charged last year.

The city has closed several courses for the winter to save money and is considering closing Whitehaven Golf Course permanently, because these courses lose money.

Ford says before this happens, an independent audit needs to be done to make sense of the numbers.

The City Council is expected to discuss golf courses next week. Ford says he hopes to get answers from the Parks Department at that time.
