Memphis police Officer Terrance Shaw, who has been on paid leave since he shot and killed a teenager in September, is back on the job behind a desk, police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph confirmed to FOX13 News.

Officer Shaw was off-duty at the time he allegedly shot and killed Justin Thompson Sept. 24 after an attempted robbery.

"The decision to put an officer back to duty is determined by the Deputy Director," Sgt. Rudolph said.

The 28-year-old Shaw is a six-year veteran of the city's police force and has been cleared in three previous officer-involved shootings.

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is still investigating the September shooting.

"At this time, the investigation into what exactly occurred during the night in question is still under investigation by the TBI," Sgt. Rudolph said. "Due to the fact that no criminal charges have been filed, Shaw was returned to duty in non-enforcement status. He is currently assigned to the RTCC. Rather than sitting at home with pay, he has been returned to duty in non-enforcement status. He is able to assist with duties which would not require him to carry a gun or make arrests. He can assist with clerical work, answering phones, taking reports, etc."

The Memphis Police Association added that residents shouldn't judge Officer Shaw until the TBI investigation is complete.
