MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

November was a record month for firearm background checks in the State of Tennessee.

FBI statistics show 59,840 people went through federal background investigations in order to purchase a gun. That's the highest number since the checks went into effect in 1998.

Gun dealers say there are several factors leading to the run on guns. One of them is President Barack Obama's re-election.

"People are afraid that they may lose their right to own a certain type of weapon or possibly any weapon," said Richard Farrell, General Manager at Guns & Ammo on Summer Avenue in Memphis.

Farrell said some gun deals are even having issues keeping some items in stock.

"It's been very busy. I mean we're doing above average in volume," Farrell added. "People are more interested in owning guns at this period of time."

Statistics show gun sales are up nationwide. Last year the FBI processed 16,454,951 background checks. This year they have processed 16,808,538 through November.
