Memphis firefighter and paramedic Gary Teel has been working his construction side job while his wife has been sick the past few years and unable to work. The day before Thanksgiving he fell off of a roof he was repairing and broke both of his arms.
But you won't hear him asking for help or crying about it.
"Our family is a good Christian family. We believe in God and we know He's taking care of us and it's in His hands," Teel said. "It's out of my hands. Nothing I can do."
There is one thing that does tear him up: the generosity of his fellow firefighters.
His team members already collected more than $1,000 for Teel, his wife and two children – ages 11 and 6. They're also picking up Teel's shifts at works so that he continues to receive a paycheck and health benefits.
"It's just like he was there. We're working for the city at no additional cost to the city, and he can keep a check. We're all coming together trying to do that," said Len Sheppard, a fellow firefighter and paramedic with Teel. "He is not that type to say, ‘Hey I need help.' We would actually have to go in and say, ‘No, you're getting help.'"
It's the kind of help that's leaving Teel speechless.
"That means a lot to me," he said. "It's more than ... you can't say thank you enough for that. I just want to say that's what it means when you want to take care ... help take care of people."
If you want to donate to Teel and his family, you can drop off donations at any of the Memphis fire stations.
