A Memphis police officer shot and killed an armed suspect and detained another Thursday afternoon after three armed subjects, reportedly robbed a McDonald's fast food restaurant in Frayser, police said.

The deadly and chaotic encounter took place at around 4:15 p.m. on Frayser Boulevard at Overton Crossing Street.

The reported officer-involved shooting took place in the woods near the fast food restaurant after police gave chase, police said.

"The police seen them running through the cut over there and started shooting at them," a witness told FOX13 News. "I don't even know who it was, so much stuff going on, people running."

Police spokesman Col. Frank Garrett said the officers chased one of the suspects in the woods and that was where the shooting took place.

"Once the officers made the scene they say the suspects ran from the building," Col. Garrett said. "An officer did give chase and one of the suspects was shot in this particular incident."

Based on preliminary information, police crews were dispatched to the McDonald's after receiving a robbery in progress call. Police dispatch was told two armed suspects, possibly three, were robbing the restaurant.

Police were told at least three suspects entered the McDonald's, and there was a possible fourth suspect who drove a get-away vehicle.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene.

A police cruiser dispatched to the crime scene collided with a telephone pole near the fast food restaurant. The officer inside were not injured, Col. Garrett said.

"No officers were injured during this incident," he said. "We did have one that had a slight accident coming here but other than that everybody's good."

A second armed suspected also fled into the woods but was later detained.

The suspect in the reported get-away vehicle sped off when police crews arrived. Police were told a woman was driving the get-away vehicle, a brown Ford Taurus.

Air support assisted police in the search for the other suspects.

Col. Garrett said it's always dangerous when dealing with armed suspects.

"We're a large city, we're a large metropolitan city and we do have incidents such as these," he said. "Officers react, they fall back on their training, they do what they're taught. Like I said, the majority of the time we come out ahead."

Col. Garrett would not say if the suspects fired any shots at the officers.

The incident remains under investigation.
