Ark. man arrested for death of live-in girlfriend

SALESVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Baxter County authorities have arrested a Salesville man on suspicion of capital murder in the beating death of his live-in girlfriend on New Year's Eve.

Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says 45-year-old Lisa Kay Smith was found dead at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Montgomery says investigators believe Lisa Smith died from head and neck trauma after she was beaten with a claw hammer and knife.

Authorities arrested her boyfriend, David Craig Smith, in her death. Montgomery says David Smith and Lisa Smith were not related, though they shared the same last name.

David Smith is being held without bond at the Baxter County jail on a charge of capital felony murder with aggravating, cruel and unusual circumstances. Authorities did not know if he had an attorney.
