A 6-year-old girl in an upstairs bedroom suffered a gunshot wound in the lower right leg from someone firing off a gun late Monday evening, police said.

The incident took place just before 10:30 p.m., New Year's Eve., at the Highland Chateau Apartments on Shelborne Court.

The girl was taken by private vehicle to Methodist North Hospital for treatment.

According to a police report, the young victim and several others were upstairs Monday evening in the apartment when they heard gunfire. An adult inside the residence when outside to check for a possible suspect who she did not locate.

Soon after the female adult re-entered the apartment she heard more shots and heard the young girl screaming.

The little girl was last listed in stable non-critical condition and was taken to LeBonheur Children's Hospital for further treatment.

Officers received information on a possible suspect but no charges have been filed at this point.
