2012 warmest on record in Memphis, Chattanooga

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -

The year just ended was the warmest on record in Memphis and Chattanooga according to figures from the National Weather Service. Meanwhile in both Knoxville and the Tri-Cities area the average temperatures tied with the previous record years.

Memphis saw an average temperature of 66 degrees, compared to just 62.1 in a normal year. The previous record of 65.6 degrees was set in 2007.

In Chattanooga the average for 2012 was 63.6, edging out the 63.5 record set in 2007.

In Knoxville the average temperature was 61.6, tied with the previous record set in 1933. In the Tri-Cities, the average was 58.3, tied with the record set in 1990.

Nashville tied a record for its second-warmest year with an average temperature of 62.3 degrees.
