A man who was eating in is parked car in a grocery store parking lot in East Memphis was held up at gunpoint, kidnapped and carjacked by an armed suspect, Memphis police said.
The incident unfolded at around 11:35 a.m. on Poplar Avenue near Kirby.
The motorist, identified as Barry Horne, was grabbing a quick bite to eat during his lunch break. A man pointed a gun at him and then hit him in the head. Horne was forced into the passenger seat of his 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix while the suspect jumped into the driver's seat of the victim's car.
"A guy came up out of no where with a gun, told me to get out at first," the victim said to FOX13 News. "I did that. Then he said get back in. He hit me in the back of the head with his gun and made me move over. "
Down the street the suspect ordered Horne to get out of his Grand Prix. The armed male suspect grabbed $10 from Horne and his work phone, forced him to get out at a drug store parking lot, and then sped off with the victim's car.
"He drove me here to this Walgreens and took $10 I had on me and my work phone," Horne said. "He let me out here and kept on going. I'm thankful to be here. Praising God right now that I'm alive. I'm still mad. I wanted to hit the guy and I couldn't."
Earlier in the hour, the armed male, along with three other males, were being followed by police officers, who police believed they were possibly responsible for an earlier burglary.
According to police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph, two of the suspects being followed by police bailed out of the vehicle. One of the suspects ran over to a Kroger grocery store parking lot on Poplar Avenue and Kirby and proceeded to kidnap and carjack Horne.
A second suspect who also bailed on foot, remains at-large, police said.
Police continued to follow the two male suspects in the car and apprehended the two men in the 6700 block of Massey.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
