HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The Hattiesburg City Council has approved a change to the city's land use code to allow microbreweries to open in the city's downtown area.

The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/11eZtMQ ) two breweries are currently equipping to begin brewing by spring.

Southern Prohibition brewery, owned by John Neal and Quinby Chunn, is remodeling a former furniture warehouse to house a 20-barrel brewing system capable of producing up to 3,000 barrels of beer each year.

The second brewery, Gordon Creek Brewery, is located four blocks away from Southern Prohibition and brewer Sam Sorrells said he is expected to begin brewing by February.

The council approved the zoning issue at Tuesday's meeting.
