Help to fight crime in the Bluff City could come from Nashville.

Tennessee State Rep. Antonio Parkinson of Memphis has filed a bill to get tough with criminals Who use a gun to commit violent crime.

He wants to give judges the flexibility to double the sentence for those convicted of gun crimes.

Rep. Parkinson, who calls some of these criminals terrorists, said the bill he has introduced is referred to as the Times X 2 bill (X2 bill), which is a common sense approach to fighting crime statewide.

If passed the bill would allow judges to double the sentence for anyone convicted of a violent crime and uses a deadly weapon (firearm). Also parole or early release would not be an option.

The state lawmaker is seeking support from Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich and other prosecutors around the state. He expects opposition in Nashville, from Tennesseans who will complain that his bill could lead to prison overcrowding.

Rep. Parkinson has stepped out in front as Nashville will debate the rights of gun owners and the need to fight crime. He has already introduced a bill to make it felony to illegally give a firearm to a juvenile.
