FOX13 News has learned the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations has wrapped up its investigation of Memphis Police Officer Terrance Shaw, who shot and killed a teenager in September 2012 while he was off-duty.
A TBI spokesperson told FOX13 News the investigation into Officer Shaw was completed in December and was forwarded to Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich's office.
The officer-involved shooting inflamed the community and in its wake ultimately led to a review of the Memphis Police Department.
The TBI was looking into whether this shooting was justified.
A spokesman for the DA's office said they received the case file at the beginning of January. Attorneys will review the case file and decide whether to present it in front of a grand jury.
Officer Shaw was off-duty when he shot and killed 15-year-old Justin Thompson Sept. 24, 2012. The officer said he was defending himself, saying Justin was trying to rob him.
In December, Police Director Toney Armstrong said Officer Terrence Shaw, who was back on the job after he killed Justin, is no longer on active duty with the force and back on paid leave.
The outcome of TBI's investigation is not known.
