Peabody Elementary School practices the philosophy of giving back.  Earlier this month, the school raised $800 for Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts – the funds were donated to the American Red Cross.  On Monday, January 28, from 12 to 6 p.m., the school will continue is outreach work by hosting a community-wide blood drive to support storm victims.  During the six-hour period, the Red Cross Blood Bus will be parked outside the school at 2086 Young Avenue for parents, staff and any adult community member to donate blood conveniently, right in the heart of the Cooper-Young Historical District.  Students who are members of the Peabody Beta Club will serve as volunteers for the event. 

In the weeks following the massive storm that hit the Northeastern United States in late October, hundreds of blood drives were forced to cancel due to the devastation.  Since blood is still needed, the Red Cross urges citizens in non-affected areas to make blood donations as a way to help. 

"We teach our students about civic responsibility and helping those in need of help," said Kongsouly Jones, principal of Peabody Elementary School.  "At our school, an International Studies theme exists to teach children about diversity, responsibility, tolerance and acceptance.  Not only is it important to be academically sharp, it's vital to be responsible people who help others in need.  This is one way we can demonstrate how to be responsible and take care of our community."
