Background checks for substitute teachers
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) -

Substitute teachers in the Lee County school system will undergo background checks.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the school board took the step this week after a former substitute teacher was charged with sexual battery for an alleged sexual relationship with a student.

Schools Superintendent Jimmy Weeks says the substitute teachers can go to the Lee County Sheriff's Office to undergo the background check, which will be done through the FBI and National Crime Information Center.

The teachers will pay the $32 feel for the tests. Weeks says it takes about two weeks for results to come back.

The Tupelo School District requires background checks on its substitute teachers and does so for parents who supervise students.
