MCS to Host School Closure Proposal Public Hearings

Memphis City Schools will host a public hearing at *Westwood Elementary School tonight, January 28, from 5:30 - 7 p.m. District leaders will present a Preliminary Impact Report detailing past and current trends and conditions, as well as discuss the possibility of merging various student populations. The community is encouraged to attend and provide feedback to SCBE members. It is important to understand that NO decisions regarding the future of any of these schools have been made yet.

*If approved by the SCBE, Westwood Elementary will receive students from Coro Lake Elementary and White's Chapel Elementary.

If the Board approves the proposal, students who currently attend:

Coro Lake Elementary would attend Double Tree Elementary or Westwood Elementary,

Norris Elementary would attend Hamilton Elementary,

Orleans Elementary would attend Lincoln Elementary,

White's Chapel Elementary would attend Westwood Elementary, and

Humes Middle School would have no attendance boundary.

Peabody Elementary Blood Drive – Cancelled

The Peabody Elementary School Blood Drive scheduled for today has been cancelled. The new date will be announced at a later time.

PACE to Host Annual PACT-Time Event for Families

The Division of Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) invites parents and students, ages 6 and up, to join them for its annual PACT-Time program at the Orpheum Theatre Tuesday, January 29, at 5:45 p.m. Families will be treated to a FREE performance by the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. The Lula Washington Dance Theatre has built a reputation for the earthiness, energy and humanism of its performances. The dances tell stories drawn from African-American history, culture and life. These productions present a unique opportunity for students to understand historical events through a creative, energetic and engaging medium.

Trezevant High School to Host Health Care Career Day

Baptist Memphis CEO and administrator Derick Ziegler will host a career day to encourage 10th and 11th grade students at Trezevant High School to pursue a career in health care on Thursday, January 31 from 1:20 p.m. to 3 p.m. Baptist Memphis colleagues specializing in respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, etc. will speak with the students about their education and training and what their position entails.

This is the second time Baptist Memphis has visited Trezevant this year.

PACE to Host Watch D.O.G.S Training Session

PACE will conduct a training session for the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 10:00 A. M. to 12 noon at PACE, which is located in Airways Middle School, 2601 Ketchum Ave. Brady Henderson, MCS Intervention Specialist, will speak on the topic: Bullying. We encourage all parents and community stakeholders to attend this session.

Cordova Middle School Student Wins Tennessee State Museum Essay Contest

Santeria Pratt, Cordova Middle, has been invited to the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville on Monday, February 11, to be one of the first Tennesseans to see and welcome the original Emancipation Proclamation to our state. Pratt submitted a letter written to Annie Davis, a slave, explaining her perspective as a student in the 21st century on the 13th Amendment and what America is like 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. She will also meet the curators from the National Archives in Washington D.C. who have brought the Emancipation Proclamation to Tennessee, and participate in a press preview of the document.

East High School Students Win at Regional Competition

The East High School Health Occupation Student Association (HOSA) organization competed in the West Tennessee Regional Tournament on Friday, January 18 in Jackson, TN. Students participated in health science challenges ranging from Extemporaneous Writing to CERT Skills (Community Emergency Response Team). Students who won first through fifth place have now qualified for the HOSA State competition in Nashville, TN, March 4-6, 2013.
