MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

On February 27th the City of Memphis will reinstate its extremely popular tire redemption program.

If you plan to participate, you need to get there early because the cash will go fast.

The city will be handing out a total of $40,000 to people in Shelby County who bring in used tires. If there's any money left after the first day, they'll allow people to bring more tires on Thursday, the 28th.

You will get $1 per tire, but you only bring in a total of 200 tires per day.

This not only helps clean-up the city, but it also saves the city some money. It costs $3 per tire for the City of Memphis to clean tires up off the streets.

Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins says these ugly piles of tires can be a health hazard for people who live around them.

"Spring has come a little sooner and water standing in these tires contributes to mosquitoes breeding, which leads to West Nile.  Also, the burning.  Look at what once was a home across the street.  Someone could come start a fire," he says.

There are a couple of rules for the buyback program. You have to have a valid Tennessee license and your car has to be registered in Shelby County to be eligible.

The Shelby County Tire Recycling Center, where the program takes place, is located 3000 Elvis Presley in South Memphis.
