Memphis Mayor A C Wharton hinted recently at a plan for the creation of a plaza to honor Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The King Plaza would be a centerpiece of the Downtown Heritage Trail Project, which seeks to revitalize the Foot and Cleaborne Homes Housing Project.
City Projects Director Robert Lipscomb said that creating a plaza to honor the late Civil Rights leader now figures to come sooner than later.
"This community's going to be stunned at what we got going for Heritage Trail," he said. "It's going to be, it's going to make Memphis. You know Memphis owes Dr. King a special debt of gratitude and we intend to show that at some point."
A portion of Linden was renamed in honor of Dr. King in a downtown ceremony.
