Memphis Police Officers Ned Aufdenkamp and Matthew Dyess are back on duty with the police force after they were relieved of duty following the January fatal officer-involved shooting of Steven Askew.

Police Director Toney Armstrong said the two officers, who had been relieved of duty with pay since the Jan. 17 fatal shooting, are back on duty but not on patrol.

Officers Aufdenkamp and Dyess shot and killed the 24-year-old man at a Southeast Memphis apartment complex. Police say the officers responded to a loud music disturbance call at an apartment complex and spotted a man slumped over in a car in a parking space. As the officers proceeded to check on Mr. Askew, police say the man pointed a weapon at the officers.  

Mr. Askew's family has accused the officers of using excessive force and want an independent review of the case.

All information surrounding this case was presented to the Attorney General's Office and it was determined that no criminal charges will be filed.

Both officers, who are assigned to the Mt. Moriah precinct, are back on duty in a non-enforcement capacity pending the outcome of the administrative investigation. They are still under investigation by internal affairs to see if they violated any department policy.

The officers have been temporarily reassigned to the Real Time Crime Center.
