MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

In a letter from the city, Memphis has decided to abolish all of its city car inspection employees since city council stopped funding the Motor Vehicle Inspection Bureau.

The inspectors' last day on the job will be June 30. The MVIB's last day of funding is July 1.

The letter, dated Wednesday, says those who will lose their position will be able to meet with the city's human resources department before March 11 to figure out what is next for them.

In January the Wharton administration told the city council the hope is the State of Tennessee will hire the car inspectors once the state takes over the vehicle inspection program.
