MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

MPD officer Calvin Taylor was shot in the leg, twice, in the 4000 block of Berkshire Ave this afternoon.   The officer is currently at The MED in non-critical condition.

MPD Director Toney Armstrong says "He is alert, he knows what's happening, he's upbeat, never lost consciousness and his family is with him."

Armstrong said while assisting with a narcotics warrant several pit bulls attacked the officers from inside the house.  When officers shot at the dogs they accidentally hit Officer Taylor who was outside the home.  Two of the dogs were killed.

Officer Taylor, 45, joined the MPD in 1998.  He joined the Organized Crime Unit in 2011.

The officer was transported in non-critical condition.  MPD set up roadblocks in route to The MED so there were no delays.

Director Armstrong said this is still an active investigation.
