Memphis Airport opens rental car facility upgrade
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

For those flying in and out of Memphis International Airport, things are changing.  There is a huge new parking facility out in front of the main terminal. It's a seven level ground transportation center with parking for 4,500 cars. Many of them will be part of the rental car fleet that services the airport. So, instead of catching a shuttle bus, you simply walk out of the terminal and head toward the new transport center.

The new transport center is accessible via the new 840 foot long moving sidewalks that connect the new center with the terminal.

"This is a huge upgrade for Memphis and for the visitors that come to our great city here and visit us and travel with us…what a great improvement to have from a customer service standpoint. Walk out of a bag claim, walk to your car and all the elements are removed and you're on your way," says Bud Denker, the President of Penski Car Rental/Hertz.

While there are not a lot of visitors to the new center on the first day, the hope is that when Southwest opens up for business, the change could be big.

But, the travelers we spoke with seem excited by the improvements.

Joy Fitzgerald remarked, "I think this is nice and a great enhancement that we don't have to go on rental car road. You can come right to the airport."
