NASHVILLE, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Tuesday, a group of Memphis students, teachers, and education activists made their way to Nashville to try and lobby legislators to vote against the Municipal Schools Bill.

The Municipal Schools bill, with support from a few other bills would split the Unified School District apart. Stand for Children is trying to prevent that.

Stand for Children members, teachers, and students all met at the group's headquarters right before sunrise on Tuesday morning.

About 50 people boarded a bus headed for Nashville to lobby their representatives and members of the education committees to vote against the bills, and instead follow the plan of the committee created to guide the merger.

"We feel these bills are going to further divide our city.  And we have a Transition Planning Commission that came up with a plan, it was a good plan," says Ryan Tracey with Stand for Children.

The Municipal Schools Bill will make its first appearance before legislators a week from Tuesday in the House Education Subcommittee.
