An off-duty Memphis police officer who allegedly shot and killed a 15-year-old Monday evening after an attempted robbery will remain off duty but will be paid pending the outcome of an investigation.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations is looking into the incident.
The fatal shooting, one of three over a three-hour period Monday evening, unfolded at around 8 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Wooddale and Jenkins.
Mayor A.C. Wharton, who called a news conference 20 hours after the incident, said it's obvious over past few weeks there's been an increase in incidents of alleged misconduct with city employees, largely the police department.
Mayor Wharton said the police department is in an unacceptable state because of what has transpired in recent weeks with several officers on the force.
