Lesbian couples seek Miss. marriage licenses

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Five lesbian couples applied for marriage licenses in Forrest County this week, knowing they would be denied.

Wednesday's effort was part of a national group's campaign to gain equality for gay, lesbian and transgendered people. The "Campaign for Southern Equality" is based in Asheville, N.C.

First Memphis homicide of 2013 found in car trunk

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Memphis were inspecting an abandoned car when they discovered the city's first homicide of the new year.

A police spokeswoman said officers found a male body in the trunk of a 2001 Mazda Millennium on Wednesday afternoon. The person's identity wasn't immediately known.

Bond set for suspect in fatal Greenville shooting

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A bond of $2.5 million has been set for a 36-year-old man charged in a fatal shooting last Friday in downtown Greenville.

Police Sgt. Michael Merchant tells the Delta Democrat Times reports (http://bit.ly/RtqeJh) that bond was set for Rico Brown during an initial appearance Monday in city court.

Tourism board members removed in Alcorn County

CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - Corinth and Alcorn County officials have fired all members of the local tourism board.
