Desoto Co. panel approves performance center

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - The DeSoto County Board of Education has agreed to advertise for bids to build a performing arts center at Olive Branch High that would be almost identical to the one built at DeSoto Central High.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/RRXAxr ) the auditorium likely will seat about 300 and be about 11,000 square feet.

Supervisors to seek new mosquito contract

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - The Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 to negotiate a new contract with Mississippi Mosquito Control, the company that currently serves the county.

Its proposal was not the lowest offer, but supervisors said Monday that 19 years of experience and other qualifications made it the best offer.

Man sentenced in home invasion, sexual assault

LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) - A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for 50 years for a home invasion in which he held a mother and daughter captive and sexually assaulted them.

Gambling raid leads to arrests in Moss Point

MOSS POINT, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says officers arrested eight people during a raid on a Moss Point home suspected of being a gambling house.

Tropical storm warning in Jamaica ahead of Sandy

MIAMI (AP) - A tropical storm warning has been issued for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Sandy approaches and is expected to strengthen.

Sandy's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 45 mph (75 kph). But the U.S. National Hurricane Center says Sandy is forecast to be a hurricane when it nears Jamaica on Wednesday.
