The unified school board passed a $1.18 billion school budget Thursday afternoon. Seventeen board members voted for the passage of the budget.

There were three no votes cast.

Club 152 a very popular nightclub on Beale Street was declared a nuisance and closed by the Shelby County District Attorney on Thursday after a raid by law enforcement.

Corky's Ribs and Bar-BQ founder Don Pelts passed away Wednesday night on the eve of the 2013 Memphis In May Barbeque Contest.

According to his employees at his Poplar Avenue restaurant, he died of a massive heart attack. He was 72.

Memphis Police Communications had difficulties with the 9-1-1 phones lines Wednesday evening.  After midnight the issue was resolved and all calls were handled as normal.

Gov. Haslam signs grocery tax reduction into law

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Republican Gov. Bill Haslam has signed into law a reduction in the state's sales tax on groceries.

Starting on July 1, Tennessee shoppers will pay a 5% sales tax on retail food items. That's a reduction from the current 5.25% tax, and down from 5.5% in the previous budget year.
