Richard Montgomery selected to parole board

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed former state Rep. Richard Montgomery to the Board of Probation and Parole.

Montgomery, a Sevierville Republican who chaired the House Education Committee last year, lost the August primary by 78 votes to Dale Carr in District 71.

Montgomery's term on the seven-member board will be for six years.

Smokies park hosted an extra half-million in 2012

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - A half-million more visitors toured the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2012 than during the preceding year.

Figures released by the National Park Service showed nearly 9,686,000 people entered the park during last year. That compares with just below 9,009,000 the year before.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) -

Two new statutes of Elvis Presley are part of phase 2 of his Tupelo birthplace's $6.3 million expansion.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the plans were unveiled Tuesday during the local celebration for the late rock 'n' roll icon on the day he would have turned 78.
