NLR swears in 1st new mayor in 20 years

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - North Little Rock has sworn in its first new mayor in more than 20 years.

Joe Smith won the city's top post in a runoff election against former state Sen. Tracy Steele. Smith takes over for outgoing mayor Pat Hays, who has served as the city's leader since 1989.

Hays decided last year not to seek another term as mayor.

De Queen woman wins $2 million Powerball prize

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lottery officials say a De Queen woman has won $2 million off a $3 Powerball ticket.

Lottery officials presented a check Monday to Sherry Miller. Officials say Miller correctly picked all five numbers in the Powerball in last week's drawing and won the $2 million Powerball prize.

Pryor, Boozman praise bipartisan fiscal cliff deal

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Both Arkansas senators voted in favor of legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff of across-the-board tax increases and major spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic agencies.

The Senate approved the legislation by an 89-8 vote early Tuesday. The measure now heads to the House.

Judge considering suit over Barling alcohol vote

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A Sebastian County judge is considering a lawsuit over whether a vote legalizing alcohol sales in Barling should stand.

Barling voters approved the measure Nov. 6 but opponents are challenging the legality of the vote.
